Police Museum at Knock
| It probably one of the best kept secrets in the PSNI, that
sitting within the grounds of the Police Service of Northern Ireland's
Headquarters, is the Police Museum.
The museum whilst small habours a wealth of information on the RIC the Royal Irish Constabulary, the police service in place prior to the separation of Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, the RUC the Royal Ulster Constabulary which was formed in Northern Ireland in 1922 to take over the duties of the RIC and the PSNI the Police Service of Northern Ireland which was set up following terrorist ceasefires and the Patton Review into policing. Whether you are a resident of Belfast or whether you are visiting the city visiting the museum may prove both informative and interesting for you. The museum is open Monday to Friday and it is advisable to contact the curator and book your visit and he will be able to talk you through the various exhibits. If you are visiting Belfast you may also wish to visit other museums which have police exhibits, such as the Ulster Museum or the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum. This museum proves interesting as it forms part of the Police Service itself and therefore tells it's story from that perspective. The exhibits walk you through the history of policing in Northern Ireland and Ulster and displayed are weapons such as mortars, incendiary devices and bombs recovered and made safe during the troubles.
