Gran Fondo - Belfast 2017
The third and final Northern Ireland Gran Fondo has started with cyclists from both routes taking their places at the startline which this year is not the famous Titanic Belfast museum but the seat of Northern Ireland power, Parliament Buildings in the Stormont Estate.
Following the success of the Giro d'Italia in Belfast, the city becomes host and starting point for the
2017 Gran Fondo. The Gran Fondo has attracted cycling enthusiasts from across the globe to experience the
scenic beauty and rich history of Northern Ireland and it capital city, Belfast. The arrival of both the
Giro d'Italia and now the Gran Fondo is a clear testament to how far the city has come and its new position on
the world's stage.
The starting line for this spectacular event was Belfast's Stormont Estate and with Parliament Buildings
standing as a proud backdrop 4,631 cyclists set off on one of the two routes, a main route which took in the
Mourne Mountains whilst the other saw riders travel to Strangford Lough.
The Mourne Mountains route is a whopping 174km long and took some of Northern Ireland's picturesque towns and
scenery such as Ballynahinch, Warrenpoint and Comber. Whilst the Strangford Lough route is a much flatter
route spanning some 58km.
The finish line saw riders return to the Stormont Estate in the heart of East Belfast, to celebrate their
wins and their completion of this challenging event.
